Sixth Street Bridge - Downtown Los Angeles, CA

"Iconic Design, Urban Transformation"

The new Sixth Street Viaduct in Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA) is a bridge that replaced the original Sixth Street Viaduct. The original viaduct, built in 1932, had deteriorated due to a chemical reaction in the concrete, making it unsafe for public use. The new Sixth Street Viaduct is an ambitious and visually striking project that aims to enhance connectivity, improve safety, and revitalize the surrounding area. The bridge spans the Los Angeles River, connecting the Arts District on the east side with the Boyle Heights neighborhood on the west side.

Quality Control

The design of the new viaduct is an iconic cable-stayed bridge with a unique "ribbon of light" concept. The bridge features ten pairs of arches illuminated by programmable LED lights, creating a stunning visual display at night. The arches serve as a signature element of the viaduct and provide a distinctive identity for the structure. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the new viaduct incorporates various improvements for pedestrian and cyclist safety. It includes dedicated bike lanes, wider sidewalks, and scenic overlooks, encouraging active transportation and offering opportunities for recreational use.

Construction of the new Sixth Street Viaduct began in 2015, and the bridge opened to the public on October 2, 2022. The project is part of a broader effort to transform the surrounding area, including the development of parks, green spaces, and community amenities. The new viaduct serves as a vital transportation link, accommodating vehicular traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists. It not only improves mobility but also contributes to the overall aesthetic and character of Downtown Los Angeles.
